Have you ever opened up a Word document to find it full of paragraph marks and other symbols?
If you’re editing the doc or troubleshooting a formatting issue, you may find this view especially useful. But if you don’t want to see the formatting marks, simply toggle the paragraph button–seen in the middle of the ribbon above or as described in the video–to turn them off.

It depends on what you mean by remove. Those paragraph marks (their proper name is a pilcrow) play an important role in Word. Most of them store all the formatting information for the paragraph they’re in. The keyboard shortcut to select all is ⌘ Command+A on Mac, and Control+A on Windows. Alternatively, you can select a paragraph or only a few lines. In this case, you will be editing character spacing only for the selected part of your document. Power button: Press to turn on your Mac or wake it from sleep. Press and hold for 1.5 seconds to put your Mac to sleep. Continue holding to force your Mac to turn off. Option–Command–Power button. or Option–Command–Media Eject: Put your Mac to sleep. Control–Shift–Power button. or Control–Shift–Media Eject: Put your displays to. Click File Options to open the Word Options dialog box. In the Word Options dialog box, please click Display in left bar, and then check Paragraph marks option in the Always show these formatting marks on the screen section.
If you've noticed dots appearing where your spaces should be, and funny backwards-looking 'P's at the end of every paragraph then you have the formatting mar.
- From the File tab, select Options.
- Click the Display tab.
- In the section Always show these formatting marks on the screen, un-check everything exceptObject Anchors.
- Press OK.
